Downtime Due to a damaged Hydraulic Cylinder: PM’s Repair Service Gets You Back to Work!

At PM, we specialize in manufacturing hydraulic cylinders, also service them to extended life for your equipment for best performance.

A hydraulic cylinder also known as a hydraulic actuator, that produces force through linear motion by hydraulic fluid. Hydraulic cylinders are widely used in many industries to perform strong and precise movements in heavy machinery. At PM, we specialize in manufacturing hydraulic cylinders, also service them to extended life for your equipment for best performance.

Components of a Hydraulic Cylinder

  1. The cylinder barrel serves as the outer casting and contains pressurized hydraulic fluid which is built with high-strength steel or aluminum to withstand high forces making the piston’s movement.
  2. Cylindrical head is attached at the end of the barrel with a rod seal to prevent fluid leakage and also provide structural support to maintain internal pressure.
  3. The piston is Made from hardened steel or aluminum which separates two fluid chambers inside the barrel to control fluid movements.
  4. This extended corrosion-resistant steel piston rod is then connected to the machinery to perform it works.
  5. Seals such as

                    – Rod Seals – Prevent leakage along the piston rod.

                   – Piston Seals – Separate fluid chambers inside the barrel.

  •                   – Wiper Seals – Keep dirt and debris out

Common Hydraulic Cylinder Issues

Hydraulic Cylinders are designed to handle high-pressure and heavy loads. Like other machinery hydraulic cylinders can develop issues such as

  1. Oil leaks from the cylinder head, piston rod, or seals. These leakages are caused by worn-out seals due to high pressure or aging, damaged piston rod, and improperly fitted seals.
  2. Internal leakage within the piston seals, low or contaminated hydraulic fluid level make the cylinder move slower than the expected performance or produce unusual jerk during operation and also overheat the hydraulic cylinder.
  3. Damaged hydraulic lines and broken valves fail the cylinder to extend and retract.
  4. Excessive side loads and wrong alignment can bend or break the piston rod.

Hydraulic Cylinder Maintenance & Repair

Regular maintenance and inspection can prevent most hydraulic cylinder issues. By understanding these common problems and their causes, you can keep your hydraulic system running smoothly and efficiently. Hydraulic cylinders can be repaired instead of being replaced. The feasibility of repair depends on the extent of damage. If the wear is excessive or the cylinder is beyond repair, replacement may be necessary. Timely maintenance can help reduce long-term repair costs.
